flat pack technology in one-day CL
Menicon from the beginning 2012 will offer in the market innovative disposable contact lenses packaged in a 1 mm (!) thin flat pack rather than the 6 mm standard blister case. With this technology, six lenses can be packed (hydrated) in a case the size of a credit card!
The 1 - mm thick packaging of the 1 Day Flat pack is designed to reduce lens handling by always presenting the lens convex side up.
Another challenge was to restrict the movement of the lens within the pack. Patients frequently complained about having to "fish around" in their standard blister packs to find and remove the lens and then determine if it was oriented correctly before applying it. Often, they got it wrong and had to remove and reapply their lenses. The key to overcoming this problem was to place a structure in the pack to restrict lens movement.
To make a commercially viable product that meets marketing and safety standards befitting Menicon required a team effort from engineers and scientists at Menicon, working on this project for several years..
